Is Xyphedra the Next New Thing in Weight Loss?

We're probably all very familiar with the ban by the Food and Drug Administration in 2004 of a substance that had been abused by people and ultimately led to some deaths. The banned substance was effective for weight loss and diet pill companies were scrambling to make as many products as they could containing it so they could cash in on the new craze. Well, since the ban, those same diet pill companies have been scrambling to up come up with an alternative to this banned substance. So far, while some have come close, none of them have made it.

Xyphedra, which cleverly or not-so cleverly shares its last two syllables with the FDA's banned substance, makes the claim to "be back" -- implying that it will replace the effects that were enjoyed by (responsible) users prior to the 2004 ban.

Unfortunately, Xyphedra doesn't live up to its claim. It contains the following ingredients:

  • Green Tea - an effective weight loss stimulant
  • Chocamine - the jury's still out. It's a trademarked weight loss product with the main base being cocoa
  • Phenylethylamine - known by some as a "love drug" you can find it in chocolate. It has a nice effect, but for weight loss? Not so much. It's mainly there to counteract the jitters you might get from the Green Tea.
  • Picamilon - researched backs up the idea that this combination of Niacin and GABA has a "tranquilizing" effect. It needs to be at least a mg/kg of bodyweight.
  • L-Tyrosine - research supports this amino acids ability to aid in human performance and decrease stress levels.
  • L-Theanine - used as an anti-stress agent to counteract possible jitters.

If I were formulating Xyphedra, I wouldn't be too worried about counteracting the jitters (they have two ingredients there for just that) since the only stimulant is Green Tea. From this ingredient lineup, unfortunately the only weight loss ingredient is the first one. With ingredients like this, there's hardly a chance that Xyphedra will become a replacement for its banned older brother (that it looks up to, and aspires to be like, but continually fails).

OK, OK, I am done ranting and raving about my trials and tribulations of dieting. Deep down inside, I knew that good nutrition and exercise are vital keys to successful weight loss. But, like everybody else, my mind was swayed by the diets that claimed to be easy, quick and that worked like magic. Today, 50 lbs. lighter, fit and being a lean cruising machine are my lifestyle. It's logic that prevails in losing weight. Diet and exercise make scientific sense and work every time (minor exceptions to the rule). But even under optimal conditions of healthy nutrition and exercise weight loss can be hampered by the PH of our body. Let me repeat that again. Weight loss can be hampered by the PH of our bodies. This can make all the difference in the world in sustaining weight loss. I know it sounds too simple but it does make a difference.
