When she was 26 years old, with four degrees already under her belt, Sally Ride saw an advertisement for an astronaut program placed by NASA in the Stanford University newspaper. Ride and some 8,000 others responded; 35 were accepted to the program, six of whom were women, Sally Ride among them. Six years later, Ride went up in the space shuttle Challenger; in 1984, she returned to space, this time on an eight-day mission. Ride has written several books for children, all of them about space and the solar system, and she has created organizations to encourage girls to pursue studies in math, science and technology. Happy birthday to Sally Ride, who turns 57 today.
